Lancaster ISD Students Encouraged to Reach For the STARS

Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster ISD

Lancaster High School STAR Academy students were inspired to reach their fullest potential during a recent awards ceremony featuring guest speaker and spoken word artist, Shy Amos, known as ShySpeaks.

Amos, Dallas native, American hip-hop artist, singer and songwriter, encouraged the students by sharing her personal story of challenges and her refusal at age 12 to not become a "statistic." Instead Amos, explained through her poetic piece titled, "More," how she pushed herself to complete her high school diploma with a 4.0 grade point average on through college to obtain a bachelor and master’s degree.

Approximately 24 scholars were honored at the Star Academy Awards for their exceptional achievement in leadership, perseverance, character and academics.

One student, P’Lar Young, a ninth grader, recalled the impact of Amos’ message.

"I felt like she was speaking to me. The things she talked about made me look back in the past on things I shouldn’t have done," Young said. "She’s trying to help us to make sure we don’t fall off track. She wants us to be somebody."

The STAR Academy is a new addition to the Lancaster High School educational program offerings and is designed to be a catalyst to re-engage students through a rigorous progression of instruction that incorporates hands-on learning, individualized instruction, collaborative learning, team-based instruction, and real-world career connections. The goal is to offer acceleration programs to decrease the potential dropout of over-aged and at risk students. The expected outcomes of participating in the program are accelerating two grade levels (eighth and ninth grades) in one school year and improving attendance habits and behavior.

In Lancaster ISD, the STAR Academy program uses the Pitsco Instructional Model and currently targets students in their freshman year and is located at Lancaster High School. The academy is led by

Lancaster ISD District Liaison Antionette Mathews and LHS Assistant Principal Edwin Wilson and currently funded due to a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission.
