Lancaster, TX/Lancaster ISD – WFAA’s Cynthia Izaguirre celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with students from Elsie Robertson Lancaster Middle School. She helped to kick off the campus’ first Hispanic Heritage program by serving as the special guest speaker.
"Kids are passionate and resilient with open minds that are ready to be filled with life," shared Izaguirre at the close of her visit as she reflected on her own journey. "This reminds me of so many that inspired me and the community that helped to fill me with hope to fulfill my dream of becoming a news anchor for the Channel 8 News."
LMS Principal Pamela Brown said, "Many staff members are fans of Cynthia Izaguirre and watch Channel 8 News. She often speaks of her Hispanic heritage, parents and upbringing on the air, and we thought that it would be exciting to have her as our guest speaker to help celebrate."
Izaguirre was excited to share her story and quickly connected with the students.
Specifically, Izaguirre shared that it was in eighth grade that she began to chart her career path and encouraged the LMS students to start setting goals and then follow their dreams. She told the students to keep working to overcome challenges and refuse to stop on their journey to personal success. She also advised students to always have a positive attitude, learn to save money and be compassionate towards others.
LMS student Javen Lopez enjoyed her visit.
"It was very educational and inspiring. It is because of her coming and her performance that I now think that I want to be a newscaster."
Izaguirre said that she came to inspire students.
"This is an area of high need," she said. "I feel if a student can see someone who looks like them and is successful, then it drives them to think that if I can do it, they can do it too."
One of the highlights of Izaguirre’s visit was the mock newscast. The news anchor selected a series of students and
staff from the audience to simulate a news broadcast, gave them a script and a 2-minute training session before going "live on the air."
In addition to Izaguirre’s visit, the program included a showcase of famous Hispanics from past and present along with the presentation of the flags of the seven Latin countries, musical performances from the LMS band playing the Latin Fiesta, dancers performing the mamba and the choir doing the salsa.
Cecilia Carlisle, chair of the program committee, felt that Izaguirre was the perfect fit and added to their inaugural program.
"She is a very successful Latina and her interaction with the students was phenomenal," she said. "She kept their attention and touched on some very important points that I believe were very relevant to our students."
WFAA’s Cynthia Izaguirre is a co-anchor of the News 8 at 5 PM and 10 PM. She joined the News 8 Daybreak team in January 2008 after spending 8 years as the 5, 6 and 10 PM co-anchor of the ABC affiliate in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
