Houston Elementary Defends Title at Annual Hispanic Heritage Bowl

Lancaster, TX/Lancaster ISD – For the second year, the Lancaster Independent School District hosted the Hispanic Heritage Bowl competition Wednesday, October 7, 2015, in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. Teams from the district’s secondary and elementary campuses competed in several rounds of questioning focused on Hispanic history and heritage that resulted in teams from Houston Health Science Technology Academy and Lancaster Middle School STEM Engagement Center taking top honors.

 

The 2015 Hispanic Heritage Bowl Winners are as follows:

Elementary Division:

1st place winners: Houston All Stars (from Houston Elementary School)

Team: Sasha Brown, Briana Smith, Robert Hamilton, Maggan Jackson, Saul Diaz

Coaches: Brandi Barnett and Paula Daugherty

 

2nd Place winners: Houston Hall of Famers (from Houston Elementary School)

Team: Chris Oney, Neveah Adams, Dwight Wheaton, Jordyn Loyd, Kerry Smith

Coaches: Brandi Barnett and Paula Daugherty

 

3rd place winners: Hip Hispanics (from Pleasant Run Elementary)

Team: Jackelyn Benitez, Axel Castillo, Luis Gutierrez, Anthony Silva, Jonathan Mendoza

Coaches: Blanca Rodriguez and Gloria Fernandez

 

Secondary Division:

1st place winner: LMS – Star 1 (from Lancaster Middle School)

Team: David Lucky, Jordan Adams, Aileen Campos, Brian Torres

Coach: Julian Tenorio

 

2nd Place: GWC Team B (From George Washington Carver 6th Grade)

Team: Rachel Cole, Maria Vegara, Gabriela Diaz, Niobe Gray

Coach: Jeremy Johnson

 

3rd Place: GWC Team A (From George Washington Carver 6th Grade)

Team: Elizabeth Diaz, Amaya Joseph, Emmanuel Jaimes, September Jones

Coach: LaJoy Mwambalaswa

 

It should be highlighted that the Houston All-Stars defended their championship title this year under the direction of Paula Daugherty and Brandi Barnett. The All-Stars have placed first in all of the Lancaster ISD bowl competitions since the start of the history bowl competitions series in 2013.

Throughout the competition, the Mexican Trio band entertained the audience with several authentic Mexicans songs and the Lancaster Middle School dance team performed their rendition of Mamba No. 5. Student artwork, influenced by Hispanic artists and culture, was also on display in the auditorium atrium walkway.

Each Lancaster ISD campus has an academic competition team that students can join for upcoming history bowl competitions.

The next history bowl competition will take place in February 2016 in honor of Black History Month.
